BOM205 - Buildings functions and designAim
The course aims to prepare the engineering students and students at the program "Business development and entrepreneurship" for their future role as decision makers concerning financial and organizational matters. The course provides basic knowledge in business administration, management and organization of companies and projects in the construction sector. The course introduces terminology and models to support business- and administrative related decisions. The course also aims to give students knowledge of how BIM can be used and integrated into the construction process.In addition to this the student shall:
- develop competence to plan and organize work as well as decision making in a team context
- develop competence to describe, analyze, compare and discuss business administrative and organizational aspects that affect organizations and companies in the construction industry
- develop communicative competences
Learning outcomes (after completion of the course the student should be able to)
After completion of the course the student shall be able to:- describe and give examples of basic organizational theories/principles concerning companies, such as business plan, strategies and objectives
- identify and give examples of common forms of organizing in the construction industry
- identify and give examples of common forms of organizing and executing for construction projects
- give examples and describe the relations/interdependencies between contracts, actors and stakeholders in the construction sector
- understand/comprehend conditions behind business administrative terms and models
- have knowledge of and be able to perform cost estimates for financial analysis based on consequences of decisions with a short and long term perspective in projects and organizations
- describe and explain how organizations and companies can take ethical and social responsibility in business relations and in business- and project-administrative decision making
- use methods and tools for planning, management, resource allocation, budgeting and follow up of construction projects
- describe and understand basic behavioral aspects concerning teams
- apply IT-based support tools to produce cost estimates as a basis for decision making
- use BIM model information for specifications, cost estimates and planning, utilizing the possibilities embedded in BIM for development of interaction between construction industry actors
- describe and comprehend how BSAB/AMA are related to building parts and databases
- give examples of, and describe how execution of construction projects are related to BIM considering planning, organizing and management of projects
Content
- Business organizing and management, focus on the basics of market mechanisms, business plans, objectives, strategies, ways of organizing, stakeholders, business ethics, management structures and systems
- Financial management, focus on planning and results, basic financial terminology, cost/benefit analysis, calculations and estimates taking various objectives/conditions as starting point
- Investment and investment budgets/calculations focus on investment decision making, cost estimates and calculations with a long term perspective on financial issues. This includes basic understanding of decision making mechanisms and rid analysis.
- Project administration, focus on organizing, planning, follow up, cooperation and communication
- Planning and management of construction projects, focus on execution of projects on the construction sector, procurement and contracts, resource allocation and quality management aspects such as quality/environment/work environment etc.
