Course specific prerequisites

Any prerequisite knowledge required is judged by the examiner. TKBIO students should have completed the second year of the programme.

Aim

The aim of this project course is to train students to work in an interdisciplinary synthetic biology project. This will be executed within the iGEM competition. The students will learn to plan and conduct a self-designed project, which will be presented at the iGEM jamboree.

Learning outcomes (after completion of the course the student should be able to)

  • have a basic understanding of synthetic biology
  • communicate with researchers from a different scientific background
  • work in a multidisciplinary, self-organized team
  • plan the work and solve the problem with given resources
  • execute laboratory and/or theoretical work to reach the goals of the project
  • collect and interpret laboratory and / or theoretical results
  • communicate their research to peers as well as to the general public in form of a web page and oral presentations

  • Content

    The content of the project may vary, but must be defined at the start of the project. The project should be clearly oriented towards synthetic biology.

    Organisation

    The project will be designed prior to the course (within course KBT225). The practical project work will be conducted in the Division of Systems and Synthetic Biology. This also includes additional tasks mandatory to participate in the iGEM competition (e.g. establishing and maintaining a project web page). Finally, the project will be presented at the iGEM jamboree in form of a poster and an oral presentation.

    Literature

    Relevant research articles, reviews, and previous iGEM project reports that will be handed out to the students or selected by the students themselves.

    Examination including compulsory elements

    The project is examined based on the different project presentations (web page, poster, oral presentation).

     

     

    The course examiner may assess individual students in other ways than what is stated above if there are special reasons for doing so, for example if a student has a decision from Chalmers on educational support due to disability.
