Aim

This course gives an introduction to the theory and history of architecture and aims at giving a basic orientation in these subjects as well as regarding the history of the architectural professions and their changes through history. The course is about mainly the Western history of architecture from antiquity till today. Architecture is seen in the context of art, technology and society, consequently including references to sustainability and gender issues. A basic aim for the course is to contribute to an awareness of history in the students' dialogue with the surrounding world and an awareness of history as a source of knowledge and inspiration in their future practice.

Learning outcomes (after completion of the course the student should be able to)

Knowledge and understanding
- present knowledge regarding the historical changes regarding aesthetic ideals, materials, technology, construction, gender and sustainability.
- present knowledge and understanding regarding the fundamentals and the changes of the role of the architect.
- present knowledge and understanding regarding the theory and history of architecture: the most important concepts, theories, architects, buildings and town plans.

Practice and skills
- demonstrate a reflective view on the changes of the architectural profession.
- present a basic overview of some of the changes in architecture from antiquity till today.
- present a basic presentation of the most important periods in architectural history and relate them to a larger context.


Reflection and judgment
- be able to reflect upon, discuss and evaluate contemporary architecture from a historic perspective.

Content

The course gives a presentation of the subject itself and continues with an overview of the theory and history of architecture from antiquity till today. The lectures are a crucial element in the course and they are supported by reading of the course literature and by exercises.

Examination including compulsory elements

To pass it is required to participate in an active way in the different course activities and to produce approved reports, essays and presentations. If the result is not considered as a pass in the course, then supplementation must be completed in accordance to written instructions and assessed in the next subsequent re-examination period. If this primary supplementation does not result in a pass and further supplementation is then required, this will also be notified in writing. This secondary supplementation will be assessed in the subsequent re-examination period. If the additions are then not deemed sufficient for passing the course, the course should be retaken.

The course examiner may assess individual students in other ways than what is stated above if there are special reasons for doing so, for example if a student has a decision from Chalmers on educational support due to disability.
