Course specific prerequisites

Minimum 30,0 credits from courses (in principal the first semester of the MPARC or MPDSD masters programme) with architectural design focus or corresponding qualifications.

Aim

The course prepares students for the master¿s thesis in architecture. It gives an orientation on theories and methods within the field architecture, with a particular focus on the profile of thesis directions (each direction is a group of faculty members with a shared experitise and thematic) currently available at the Department of Architecture and Civil Engineering. It provides students with the formalities regarding the thesis project, including project plan guidelines, evaluation criteria, academic writing, scheduling, seminars, and final exhibition.

Learning outcomes (after completion of the course the student should be able to)

- Prepare, plan, and monitor the masters thesis.
- Refer to basic theories and methods within architectural research
- Practice academic writing 
- Identify learning dimensions in the masters thesis, both as part of the studies and as part of the design and building/planning processes the student will meet in his/hers professions.
- Reflect on and assess the learning process the student has been through which will culminate in the masters thesis.
- Reflect on and assess the masters thesis as a design process and relate it to a professional context.
- Give and receive feedback in a constructive and creative way. 
- Draft a project plan in accordance to academic requirements

Content

The course includes lectures, workshops, seminars, assignments and presentations. With the aid of these activities, students formulate a first idea for their thesis and make an informed choice between available thesis directions (i.e. available supervisors and examiners).

Organisation

The course runs three weeks full-time.

Masters thesis preparation course 1 and Masters thesis preparation course 2 can be combined with a design studio of 22,5 hp in MPARC or MPDSD during the same semester. For scheduling reasons, students are advised against combing these courses with courses/studio of 7,5 hp or 15 hp (so called Track 2 courses).

Examination including compulsory elements

In order to obtain a pass in this course the following requirements must be fulfilled. 
- Active participation at lectures, group work, presentations and other scheduled activities (at least 80% presence).
- Submission of all course assignments.
- Elaboration on and seminar presentation of a draft for a written Masters Thesis project plan.

The course examiner may assess individual students in other ways than what is stated above if there are special reasons for doing so, for example if a student has a decision from Chalmers on educational support due to disability.
