Aim

The students shall get an introduction to and basic knowledge in how design and construction processes are managed and organized, relevant design methods and basics in construction and real estate economy and finance. The long term objective of the course is to contribute to the architect's ability to adopt leading positions in design and construction processes by deepening the knowledge about how to take an idea to completion.

Learning outcomes (after completion of the course the student should be able to)

After completion of the course the student should be able to describe

  • The main stages in the design and construction process for small, mid-size and large projects.
  • The different roles and driving forces of actors and stakeholders within the design and construction process.
  • How values are created in different types of projects.
  • The architect's role in the process.
  • The complexity of a multidisciplinary design process.
  • Basics in different types of design methodologies,
Be able to formulate:
  • Questions relevant for understanding a design and building process.
Be able to comprehensively assess
  • Investment budget of residential property development project.

Content

Design of buildings and urban areas is strongly interdependent of the actors and stakeholders and the relation between them. Frames and conditions for design are often defined by financial restrictions and values for both public and private investors. Project management processes are essential to qualify and reassure the ambitions in the project and create a functional platform for multidisciplinary collaboration cross boarders between stakeholders- and specialists. The course will give an overview of these subjects, partly from a more general point of view and partly from a practical view in contemporary projects.

Organisation

The course consists of lectures, study visits, excercises and project assignments, together building up an comprehensive understanding of the process, the actors and stakeholders, value creating, economy and methodologies for managing design processes. A set of lectures and study visits introduces the subjects and themes and are followed by a project assignment in which students, in smaller groups, will study current cases/processes with focus on the main subjects of the course. The course ends with a seminar where the project assignments are presented and discussed.

Examination including compulsory elements

Completed project assignments will be the base for grading. Examination form: completed report and concluding seminar. Examination will take place in groups and individually.

The course examiner may assess individual students in other ways than what is stated above if there are special reasons for doing so, for example if a student has a decision from Chalmers on educational support due to disability.
