Course specific prerequisites
Aim
- Provide tools for critical interpretations of architecture from feminist and intersectional perspectives. Key issues in the course are how architecture is formed and how we are formed by architecture.- Introduce methods for critical analyses and questioning of norms and ways of expression and design within architecture.
- Introduce key concepts within gender studies and highlight non-normative architects in history.
Learning outcomes (after completion of the course the student should be able to)
Knowledge and understanding- Define and explain key concepts within gender studies
- Define issues regarding identity and power and its relations to architecture, the educational situation and the professional practice
Skills and abilities
- Analyse place and space based on concepts within the field of gender studies
- Implement acquired knowledge in future educational projects and professional practice

- Formulate a personal position in relation to gender and intersectional perspectives
Content
During the course, we will study theories of feminism and intersectionality and explore the relationship to the built environment. A comprehensive view of the field of gender studies and its relationship to the built environment is presented. Concepts such as gender, power, functionality, identity, sexuality, heteronormativity, ethnicity and class in relation to architecture will be discussed. The course is based on lectures, seminars and workshops as well as meetings with projects and practices with a norm-critical approach.Organisation

To pass the course the following is required:- attendance and active participation in lectures, seminars and workshops
- delivery of course assignment If the result is not considered as a pass in the course, then supplementation must be completed in accordance to written instructions and assessed in the next subsequent re-examination period. If this primary supplementation does not result in a pass and further supplementation is then required, this will also be notified in writing. This secondary supplementation will be assessed in the subsequent re-examination period. If the additions are then not deemed sufficient for passing the course, the course should be retaken.
The course examiner may assess individual students in other ways than what is stated above if there are special reasons for doing so, for example if a student has a decision from Chalmers on educational support due to disability.
