Aim

The aim of the course is that the student shall have basic knowledge about the central object of urban planning and design, that is, the built form and spatial structure of cities, as well as the public planning process that directs urban development projects, so that she/he will be able to act as business developers and entrepreneurs in real situations in the field.

Learning outcomes (after completion of the course the student should be able to)

  • Have basic knowledge about the object of urban planning and design, that is, the built form and spatial structure of cities when it comes to the relation between different land-uses and the density, types, and measures of built form.
  • Have basic knowledge about the object of urban planning and design, that is, the built form and spatial structure of cities when it comes to the relation between different land-uses and their location in the spatial structure of cities.
  • Have basic knowledge about the object of urban planning and design, that is, the built form and spatial structure of cities when it comes to the value creation, economic feasibility and societal impact of individual building projects.
  • Have a good understanding of the legal foundations of the division of land into individual properties and their fundamental role for the built form of cities.
  • Be able to identify and explain the role of the different societal interests (the public, the state, the municipality and other stakeholders) that the Swedish planning law (PBL) regulates by way of the different planning documents and and planning processes that it stipulates for the initiation and implementations of new building projects.
  • Be able to analyze and understand the possibilities that existent planning documents, such as development plans, create for new building projects or other initiatives.
  • Be able to create, present and critically evaluate concrete building projects as expressed in illustration plans, development plans and plan descriptions.

Content

The focus of the course is the material object and planning process of urban planning and design from the perspective of the construction client. Its point of departure is that such a client aims to initiate a new building project and follows how such a project is created through an inner design process by way of consultants, where the role of the architect and/or urban designer for the projects built form is emphasized, but also how it is shaped by an external planning process where the interests of the construction client is negotiated in relation to the interest of other actors, such as the public, the state, the municipality and other stakeholders.

Organisation

The course is constituted by the following elements:

Lectures that give good insight into:
  • The object of urban planning and design, that is, the built form and spatial structure of cities
  • The process of urban planning and design as stipulated in the Swedish planning law (PBL).
Lectures are followed up by exercises and literature seminars that are critically summed up and presented in reports.

The knowledge content of the course as a whole is summed in a project assignment where a concrete building project on a specific site is designed and described:
  • In part as a concrete plan proposal for a building project on a specific site, where the form and location of this project is described and interpreted from the point of view of land-uses, economic value and societal impact.
  • In part in who this project is shaped and has been adapted by way of the public planning process.
In these assignments, supervision is given by researchers and experienced practitioners in the field.

The assignments will be presented and critically reviewed at examinations with all students present.

Study visits and exercises are carried out as a practical development of the project work.

Literature

Examination including compulsory elements

To pass the course it is needed to pass both the individual exercise (3hp) and the group assignment (6hp). The final grade is determined by the combined results of both.

The course examiner may assess individual students in other ways than what is stated above if there are special reasons for doing so, for example if a student has a decision from Chalmers on educational support due to disability.
