Aim
The course will provide a basis within the area of Geographical information management and processing, its use and application applied to the built environment (urban environment) the students will be able to carry out geographical management thru simpler analyses and presentation forms, in order to describe and visualize different types of applications in an urban environment.This course creates a basic understanding of how to use geographic data sources, geographical information from different databases. Databases belongs to municipalities, governmental authorities etc., which are designed to geographically describe the built environment and socio-demographic data. The course will introduce different types of geographical data, different applications and simpler analyzes, as well as visualization methods and presentation forms via software that is called (GIS) and is specifically focused on the management of geographical data.
Learning outcomes (after completion of the course the student should be able to)
- Describe different data models for digital spatial data (raster and vector), and be able to indicate how spatial data is typically organized, stored and administered in a computer-based environment.
- Identify different types of geographical information and be able to describe data that is relevant in physically planning and the built environment, which includes both municipal and social infrastructure.
- Describe different types of subject-specific models regarding spatial phenomena linked to the built environment.
- Using a selection of basic geographical analysis methods.
- Describe a selection of basic cartographic methods and explain the meaning of different map projections, geodetic reference systems and coordinate systems.
- Independently and in group conduct basic analyses of property-relevant geographical data in raster and vector formats using standard software for GIS.
- be able to present workflow and results from the collection and analysis of geographical data.
- Perform and present simpler statistical evaluations of spatial data in both oral and written form including images, diagrams, descriptive text and maps

Lectures and exercises, shall form the basis for the implementation of the project, hereinafter referred to as the assignment.
The course is introduced with basic lectures and a basic exercise part in the ESRI ArcGIS software. After the introduction, assignment 1 and 2, as well as extended assignment 3, will be carried out.
Lectures
The course contains a total of 5 lectures including the introduction of the course. The lectures are basic as a support for managing geographic data within the subject area GIS. The lectures conclude with a basic lecture on visualization and presentation of geographical data in image and text. The lectures are compulsory, which means 80% attendance.
Exercises and assignments
Exercise: The course starts with a basic package of exercise tasks, which goes through the ArcGIS software for work with vector and raster-based geographical information. This introductory part should be seen as an introduction and presentation of the software, therefore there is no submission for this first part.
Assignment 1: Model a number of geographical databases (from the City of Gothenburg), manage, edit, analyze and present these geographically together with descriptive texts and diagrams. All material from this first part must be saved as a basis for next assignment.
Assignment 2: We are now building on the previous task, but with more analyses and more geographical data, specifically for property information, where we analyze, validate and present the result in a similar manner as in the previous task. The submission is done via a poster in A1 format, digitally saved, and uploaded via the course homepage.
As support and assistance with the above tasks, there will be in addition to supervisors in lab, also detailed documentation and video recordings describing the information step by step. Submitted and approved poster for (task 1 and task 2), together with the obligatory presence on the lectures giving the grade 3 (G). For higher grades, you also need to submit a third assignment, see below
Assignment 3: We are now modelling and making more analyses and add more geographical data, where we will study the effects of flooding in the central part of Gothenburg, and see how this can affect infrastructure values including properties. We will study, validate and present the result in the same way as in the previous task 2. The submission is via a poster in A1 format, digitally saved, which is then uploaded via the course homepage.

The course's distributed lectures and materials are mainly based on the book "Geografisk Informationsbehandling - Teori, metoder och tillämpningar", sjätte upplagan. ISBN: 9789144088778.All material and documentation will be handed out during the course, continuously.
Examination including compulsory elements
This course has in its present form individual grading, which means that the course requires compulsory submission of task 2 which is graded with the grade (U / G), i.e. rating 3. As well as compulsory attendance at the lectures that must be fulfilled to 80%.In order to enable higher grades than 3 (4/5), an assignment 3 is also required.
The course examiner may assess individual students in other ways than what is stated above if there are special reasons for doing so, for example if a student has a decision from Chalmers on educational support due to disability.
