Eligibility

General entry requirements for bachelor's level (first cycle)
Applicants enrolled in a programme at Chalmers where the course is included in the study programme are exempted from fulfilling the requirements above.

Specific entry requirements

The same as for the programme that owns the course.
Applicants enrolled in a programme at Chalmers where the course is included in the study programme are exempted from fulfilling the requirements above.

Course specific prerequisites

Introductory course in Mathematics or Calculus in one variable, or equivalent.

Aim

The purpose of the course is to:

  • Develop an artistic attitude and an ability to perceive, express and communicate architecture.
  • Develop insights into artistic and creative processes.
  • Develop understanding of and ability to switch between two-dimensional and three-dimensional representations.
  • Provide knowledge and skills in basic geometry.

Learning outcomes (after completion of the course the student should be able to)

  • Show basic abilities in perceiving, interpretation and communication of a situation.
  • Show basic abilities in shaping, visualizing and communication of an idea.
  • Reflect upon concepts as composition, space and movement, tone and nuance, shape and color, light and shadow.
  • Explore spatial characteristics (form, light, matter, etc.), analyze form and relation (section and plan) and communicate room experiences (situations) with hand sketching as method.
  • Describe and apply basic planar- and spatial geometry to express and explore patterns, symmetries, structures and shapes.

Content

  • Colour, shape and space labs
  • Analytical sketching
  • Basic planar and spatial geometry

Organisation

The course is built around exercises / labs emanated from the language and communicative qualities of situations and places as well as of images and forms.

The course trains the ability to visualize and communicate an idea in both text, image and model.

The course is conducted in different environments and with different scales and complexity.

The course contains litterature seminars on basic planar and spatial geometry.

Literature

Wester, Ture(1984) Structural order in space: the plate-lattice dualism
Ghyka, Matila, The Geometry of Art and Life

Examination including compulsory elements

To pass requires:
an approved work process including
  • Conducted and in dialog communicated and approved art laborations
  • Presented selection of own sketches
  • Conducted and approved geometry laborations
  • Active participation in lectures, seminars, group work, tutorials and reviews.
and an approved written exam in geometry.

The course examiner may assess individual students in other ways than what is stated above if there are special reasons for doing so, for example if a student has a decision from Chalmers on educational support due to disability.
