Aim

This course aims to help students from the first year of the undergraduate program develop their expertise in various architectural issues through collaboration. The purpose is also to inspire creativity and a passion for experimentation, and to train students in working in groups. The course has a theme:
Exploring architecture as material, color, light, and space. Within the theme of varying tasks from year to year, students use various methods to explore how material, color, and light can influence our experience of objects and spaces.

Learning outcomes (after completion of the course the student should be able to)

Exploring architecture as material, color, light, and space.

- Explain how materials, colors, and light influence our perception of objects and spaces.
- Test experimental combinations of method and implementation.
- Organize and present conclusions and results from their studies of the course theme.
- Plan and implement a group study.

Content

The different themes of the course are addressed in lectures, reading, seminars, and practical exercises. Students are divided into work groups. The course concludes with each group presenting proposals for solutions for an assignment within the framework of the theme.

Organisation

The course is planned and led by a teaching team. The teaching team is responsible for the organization and content of the course.
Students are divided into work groups and are given guidance during the course.

Literature

A reading list will be provided at the start of the course.

Examination including compulsory elements

Students are evaluated on their participation in each part of the course. A passing grade requires active participation in and approved completion of all of the course assignments and experiments as outlined in a course memo. A passing grade also requires participation in the final presentation or exhibition/installation.

If the result is not considered as a pass in the course, then supplementation must be completed in accordance to written instructions and assessed in the next subsequent re-examination period. If this primary supplementation does not result in a pass and further supplementation is then required, this will also be notified in writing. This secondary supplementation will be assessed in the subsequent re-examination period. If the additions are then not deemed sufficient for passing the course, the course should be retaken.

The course examiner may assess individual students in other ways than what is stated above if there are special reasons for doing so, for example if a student has a decision from Chalmers on educational support due to disability.
