Basic course in History of Architecture

Aim

The course develops architectural theory in a material context. Consequently, the identity of the architect is viewed in our material culture and the architectural history is enlightened along the development of science and technology. The interaction of systematic reflections and built practise make us see fundamental patterns that lead to a more profound understanding. It is as if matter tries to teach us.

 

Learning outcomes (after completion of the course the student should be able to)

- Explain the development of the art of building enlightened through materials, production techniques, knowledge and mindset.
- Reflect on the interplay between historically and geographically diverse material cultures and their built structures.

Content

Literature studies addressing theories formulated among others by Stevin, Descartes, Newton, Montange, Hegel, Locke and Örsted.

Organisation

The course will be organized around lectures and seminars. The students are expected to develop their ideas and proposals in the form of essay writing.

Examination including compulsory elements

Pass the writing task. Attendance and active participation in seminars.

The course examiner may assess individual students in other ways than what is stated above if there are special reasons for doing so, for example if a student has a decision from Chalmers on educational support due to disability.
