Aim

The course aims are to:
- Explore the interplay between building design, indoor climate and rational use of energy when designing a residential building.
- Provide practically useful architectural knowledge on functions in a dwelling based on human measures and needs.
- In sketch work meet and take into account the society's regulations and governing processes.
- Practice architectural design based on space design and space organization by drawing a residential building. - Practice analysis and design methods and tools.
- Develop communication skills through the creative process in writing and speech.
- Understand the challenges of leadership by leading oneself and others in group work.
- Formulate specific ecological, social and cultural sustainability goals and evaluate goal fulfillment in an architectural project.

Learning outcomes (after completion of the course the student should be able to)

- Describe the historical and contemporary development of the dwelling and how this reflects the development of society through, for example, political decisions, ethical dilemmas and gender roles.
- Describe the dwelling features based on the human measures and needs.
- Design a dwelling where needs, functions, space design and space organization are the points of departure.
- Present a proposal in physical and digital forms, and for physical and digital exhibitions. - In the presented proposal, apply a professional vocabulary for the explanation of energy efficiency as well as the architectural expression created by the climate shell and the experience of the indoor space.
- Describe the individual as well as the group's design process through reflection on how process and dialogue have governed the result.
- Formulate experiences from the architectural design process and how these have given new insights.

Content

A residential building, which is presented in physical models, plans, sections, details and perspectives.
Approach:
- Through day sketches, gain knowledge of the dwellings interior and exterior spaces and their relations.
- Discuss the architect's role and mission, and how the language of the architect affects the built outcome.
- Supplement the given building program with own ambitions for ecological, social and cultural sustainability formulated for the project.
- Sketch early proposals as answers to a given building program.
- Describe and discuss own and others' proposals in an intermediate critique.
- Consider how the design proposal fulfill accessibility requirements and how the proposal can be improved.
- Reflect upon the proposal regarding a holistic approach and sustainibility from a life-cycle perspective.
- Model and visualize the project.
- Describe, argue, evaluate and discuss own and others' proposals in a final critique together with critics and experts from within and outside the university.
- Especially take into account the accessibility for different groups of users.

Organisation

The course consists of lectures, day sketches and architectural assignment (within the disciplines Building and Climate and Languages and Communication). Project work takes place both individually and in groups. Problem solving skills are trained during day sketches and workshops. The architecture design task runs through study periods 3 and 4 of a total of 9.0 credits and is supported by the design task in Building Physics, VBF019. The course includes linguistic elements with support from Language and Communication as well as oral presentation jointly with Building Physics. Examination including compulsory elements

The course is built around an architectural design project and examined, partly by an active process, partly through a presented, communicated and reflected result. The process includes active and full participation at lectures, seminars, group work, tutorials and critics, and a reported and approved documentation of the work process. To the results belongs a proposal delivered in time and with the requested format, a well performed reading and criticism of a fellow students' proposal, a well performed presentation and reflective defense of the group proposal, and a Portfolio presentation consisting of a reflected summary of the proposal and the process.

The course examiner may assess individual students in other ways than what is stated above if there are special reasons for doing so, for example if a student has a decision from Chalmers on educational support due to disability.
