Aim

The aim of the course is: 
  • Explore the interplay of room shapes, spatial experiences and spatial geometry.
  • Exercise the design of spaces and shape based on a geometric approach.
  • Provide practically useful architectural knowledge of stairs and ramps.

Learning outcomes (after completion of the course the student should be able to)

  • show explorative investigations of human dimensions in relation to space.
  • show explorative investigations of human movements in relation to space.
  • show, communicate and defend an architecturally designed vertical communication based on convenience and representativeness, as well as society's demands for availability and security.
  • show explorative investigations of material phenomena like gravity, light and heat, and material elements like water in relation to form and space.
  • show explorative investigations of different methods and tools for representations in 2D, 3D and in several dimensions.
  • show, communicate, and defend an architectural designed proposal for a small building

Content

Weekly sketches on various themes and an architecture project investigating alternative solutions for a small building and with the support of various methods and tools for representations in 2D, 3D and in several dimensions.

Organisation

The course is organised in lectures, exercises, seminars and an achitectural project, and is performed individually or in small teams of 2-3 students.

Examination including compulsory elements

The course is examined through an active process and through presented and in dialogue communicated results. For approval requires both approved process and approved result, see below, and approved Portfolio presentation with a reflected summary of proposal and process.

The process includes: approved theoretical studies, active participation at lectures, seminars, group work, tutorials and reviews/critics, reported and in a portfolio format approved documentation of the work process.

The results includes: in time and in the requested format reported lab results, weekly sketches and the final project, presentation and defense of own design proposal, reading and criticis of fellow students' design proposal, and in a portfolio format presented and reflected proposal.

The course examiner may assess individual students in other ways than what is stated above if there are special reasons for doing so, for example if a student has a decision from Chalmers on educational support due to disability.
