The aim of this study tour is to prove deeper knowledge about the architectural development of modernism in Paris during the 20th century with special emphasis on larger architectural and urban planning projects during the most recent decades.Learning outcomes (after completion of the course the student should be able to)
- with Paris as a point of reference describe a selection of urban spaces and buildings, and relate them to the city's changes in time.
- with Paris as a point of reference name and briefly describe some Paris architects and their influence on the history of architecture.
- with the field trip as a point of reference discuss Paris influence on cities and buildings of later times.
Content
The course is an introduction of the city of Paris as a unique reference of architecture, urban planning and culture.Organisation
The excursion in Paris is prepared through written and oral information. A meeting with the teacher contributes in helping the students to prepare for the trip, both practically and theoretically. The excursion itself consist of walking lectures/seminars in the city centre of Paris. These studies and discussions are revised by the students after the trip and presented in a way according to the teachers instructions.Literature
The examiner will suggest appropriate literature for each year through the course homepage and/or during the meeting with the students.Examination including compulsory elements
Requirements for a pass mark include participation in the preparations in Sweden and active participation during the field trip to Paris and follow-ups. If the result is not considered as a pass in the course, then supplementation must be completed in accordance to written instructions and assessed in the next subsequent re-examination period. If this primary supplementation does not result in a pass and further supplementation is then required, this will also be notified in writing. This secondary supplementation will be assessed in the subsequent re-examination period. If the additions are then not deemed sufficient for passing the course, the course should be retaken.The course examiner may assess individual students in other ways than what is stated above if there are special reasons for doing so, for example if a student has a decision from Chalmers on educational support due to disability.
