Course specific prerequisites

The bachelor's thesis may be initiated after completing 120 credits within the program. Courses that constitute necessary prerequisites for the specific bachelor's thesis must be completed. The bachelor's thesis must be approved by the program director and examiner before work begins.

Aim

The bachelor's thesis aims to allow students to integrate, deepen, and develop their knowledge and skills within a specific area covered in previous courses in the program. It also aims to provide knowledge and skills in scientific methodology and to train students to independently formulate and solve more extensive problems related to urban development.

Students shall demonstrate the ability to critically and independently utilize, systematize, and reflect on experiences and relevant research findings, thereby contributing to professional and knowledge development in the urban development sector. The thesis should reflect the program’s focus and demonstrate the ability to solve profession-related problems.

The overarching goal of the bachelor's thesis is for students to demonstrate the knowledge and skills required to work independently within their professional field.

Learning outcomes (after completion of the course the student should be able to)

Knowledge and Understanding
  • Acquire and apply in-depth knowledge in business development, entrepreneurship, and civil engineering, including an understanding of current developments and trends.
  • Independently and creatively identify, formulate, and analyze complex issues in business development and urban development, and propose innovative and sustainable solutions.
Skills and Abilities
  • Plan, critically select, and apply appropriate tools and methods to analyze problems and design strategic solutions within given resource and time constraints.
  • Present and defend project results orally and in writing for both academic and professional audiences, ensuring clarity, structure, and appropriate language use.
Reflexivity and Approach
  • Critically and systematically reflect on the role of technology in societal development, with particular consideration of economic, social, and environmental sustainability, as well as ethical aspects (EDI).
  • Critically review, evaluate, and provide constructive feedback on another bachelor's thesis regarding its research question, methodology, and results.
  • Demonstrate the knowledge and skills required to work independently in the urban development sector.
  • Understand and apply academic integrity, including proper source criticism, referencing, and copyright management.

Content

The main component of the bachelor's thesis is a project, often conducted in collaboration with a company, authority, or other organization. Students independently choose a topic within the program's main subject area. To support the thesis process, elements such as information and communication skills may also be included.

Organisation

The course may include components such as lectures and seminars. The project is supervised according to times agreed upon with the supervisor.

At the beginning of the bachelor's thesis, a planning report must be written and approved by the supervisor. The planning report should include a clear problem statement, methodological approach, timeline, and considerations of societal and ethical aspects.

The bachelor's thesis concludes with a presentation and opposition. The thesis must be presented and defended, with another student group serving as opponents for the work performed.

The thesis is conducted in pairs, or in exceptional cases, individually.

Examination including compulsory elements

For the bachelor's thesis to be approved, the following are required:
  • Approved planning report.
  • Approved project report in accordance with applicable norms for scientific and technical reporting.
  • Approved presentation and defense of the bachelor's thesis at the scheduled presentation session.
  • Approved oral and written opposition to another bachelor's thesis.
  • Attendance at two additional presentation sessions.
  • Approved in the sections on information and communication skills.
To pass the course, all learning outcomes must be fulfilled.

The bachelor's thesis will be checked using plagiarism detection tools.

The course examiner may assess individual students in other ways than what is stated above if there are special reasons for doing so, for example if a student has a decision from Chalmers about disability study support.
