Specific entry requirements

The same as for the programme that owns the course.
Applicants enrolled in a programme at Chalmers where the course is included in the study programme are exempted from fulfilling the requirements above.

Course specific prerequisites

The bachelor thesis work can commence no earlier than during the 6th programme semester. In order to secure a sufficient level of prior knowledge, students must have attained at least 120 hec from courses in the first three years of the Architecture programme to commence their bachelor's thesis work. Only credits registered in Ladok after the exam period 2 in study year 3 will be taken into consideration.

Aim

In the bachelor’s thesis, the student will integrate, extend, and develop knowledge and skills through a design project within a limited subject. The student should use what has been covered in previously completed courses in the programme. The student should demonstrate the ability to independently develop a complex design project with adequate use of methods and tools. In the project, the student should demonstrate the ability to work in different scales; from the overall scale of the city to the details of an architectural object. The student should also demonstrate the ability to combine artistic and scientific working methods in a design project.

Learning outcomes (after completion of the course the student should be able to)

Knowledge, understanding, competence and skills
  • Formulate and delimit a problem relevant to the design project within the chosen subject with the support of reference projects, literature and other background information.
  • Plan the work in order to design and present a relevant work process with a time plan and choose methods and tools for implementing the project.
  • Carry out and report a critical analysis of the architectural object in relation to the city and their interdependence.
  • Design a proposal where the interaction between spatial, building, and urban design is shaped into a whole with the requirement for sustainable and functional solutions of high quality and with good design.
  • Communicate the results of the bachelor thesis work in relation to the chosen problem in written and oral form.
Judgement and approach
  • Critically examine, evaluate, and constructively question another project with respect to problem, approach, and results.
  • Critically reflect on chosen methods, chosen problem setting when implementing the project and results.
  • Reflect on the need for further knowledge and provide suggestions for possible alternative further developments.

Content

The main part of the bachelor thesis is a design project. In the project, the student must demonstrate the ability to work at different scales; from the overall scales of the city and urban spaces to the layout and detailing of an architectural object. The choice of design project is limited, but within the framework of the project, the student chooses the subject area.

Organisation

The bachelor thesis is conducted as an individual project. The student is offered supervision within the projects’ specialization topic by supervisors with broad competence in the urban planning area, building design and the chosen subject. The work is judged by one or more partial critiques and ends with a presentation in written and oral form.

Literature

Literature will be announced at the start of the course.

Examination including compulsory elements

The bachelor’s thesis is presented by posters, model(s), and a written report and is orally presented and defended at a (criticism) seminar. The student shall also critically examine and discuss another thesis project by serving as an opponent at the seminar when the project is presented. For the examination, emphasis is placed on the quality of the project report, other material (posters, model(s)), oral presentation and opposition, especially linked to the general objectives of the bachelor thesis.

The examiner is responsible for the report to be checked in a plagiarism tool.

The course examiner may assess individual students in other ways than what is stated above if there are special reasons for doing so, for example if a student has a decision from Chalmers on educational support due to disability.
