Course specific prerequisites
Basic knowledge in acoustics is of advantage.Aim
The course focuses on building acoustics for engineers in the fields of structural engineering or building physics to support them in their profession to create healthy and supportive indoor environments.
Learning outcomes (after completion of the course the student should be able to)
Understand the impact of the acoustic environment in buildings on peoples health and wellbeing.
Define and analyze demands for a good acoustic environment indoors from a customer perspective based on psychoacoustic criteria
Explain the physics behind the propagation of sound and vibration into and inside buildings
Evaluate the influence of different design solutions on the performance of buildings with respect to sound and vibration
Apply models and tools to design the acoustic performance of buildings and evaluate their results critically
Plan, implement and evaluate acoustic indoor environments in team.
Understand and utilize standards in the field of building acoustics

Content
The course comprises the following elements
Introduction into sound and vibration challenges related to different building systems and building designs with special focus on wooden buildings
Ensuring good acoustic performance in the early design stage of buildings
Numerical tools such as Statistical Energy Analysis for the prediction of the acoustics performance of buildings and parts of buildings
Prediction schemes for the sound insulation of partitions such as walls, windows and doors
Propagation of vibrations in buildings
Subjective evaluation of acoustic environments
Typical sources of noise and vibration inside buildings, such as heating, ventilation and air condition systems in Buildings (HVAC), elevators and water supplies.
Standards and legislation concerning building acoustics.
Implementation and evaluation of acoustic environments
Organisation
The course comprises the following learning activities:
Lectures and project work including the acoustic planning of a building.
Literature
Material supplied at the course page (www.ta.chalmers.se).or Erik Vigran (2008) Building Acoustics, CRC Press
Examination including compulsory elements
Based on the reported project workThe course examiner may assess individual students in other ways than what is stated above if there are special reasons for doing so, for example if a student has a decision from Chalmers on educational support due to disability.
