Course specific prerequisites

Basic course in acoustics (e.g. 'Introduction to audio technology and acoustics' or BOM365 or BOM320 or similar).

Aim

The course gives the possibility to specialize in the area of building acoustics with focus to create supportive indoor environments. The course focuses on building acoustics for students who already have a basic education in acoustics.

Learning outcomes (after completion of the course the student should be able to)

•    Understand and explain the physics behind the propagation of sound and vibration in buildings
•    Apply models and tools to design the acoustic performance of buildings and evaluate their results critically
•    Understand and utilize standards in the field of building acoustics
•    Define and analyze demands for a good acoustic environment indoors from a customer perspective based on psychoacoustic criteria
•    Plan, implement and evaluate acoustic indoor environments in team and across disciplines

Content

The course comprises the following elements

•    Prediction schemes for the sound insulation of unbounded and finite panels double walls, windows and doors
•    The acoustic performance of wooden building elements in practical applications
•    The use of Statistical Energy Analysis in building acoustics
•    Vibrations in buildings
•    Subjective evaluation of acoustic environments
•    Typical sources of noise and vibration inside buildings, such as heating, ventilation and air condition systems in Buildings (HVAC), elevators and water supplies.
•    Standards and legislation concerning building acoustics.
•    Acoustic design of acoustic indoor environments such as class rooms, open-plan offices
•    Implementation and evaluation of acoustic environments

Organisation

The course comprises the following learning activities:

Lectures together with students from VTA 146 Room Acoustics
Project work in cooperation with Building Technology and an acoustic consultancy.
