Aim

The course is an introduction to room and building acoustics. Room acoustics deal with the acoustic characteristics of spaces and the interacting human experiences of sound, as well as how functional demands can be formulated for different sound environments. Building acoustics deal with external noise, how building design concepts can be used to prevent the spread of noise, as well as functional demands for soundproofing. The course provides basic concepts, relationships and analytical methods with the overall aim of providing tools for making acoustic assessments and design choices in the early stages of an architects and/or engineers design process.

Learning outcomes (after completion of the course the student should be able to)

Room and building acoustics – be able to explain and apply: theoretical background of room acoustics; air-borne and impact sound insulation; flanking transmission, reverberation time and equivalent absorption area. Predict: Sound field in rooms due to interior and exterior sound sources; measures to design adequate reverberation time; sound insulation between rooms.

Examination including compulsory elements

For a passing grade the student must pass the home exam as well as other compulsory teaching moments.

The course examiner may assess individual students in other ways than what is stated above if there are special reasons for doing so, for example if a student has a decision from Chalmers on educational support due to disability.
