Course specific prerequisites

Aim

The purpose of the project and the related parts is to introduce and study the interaction between residents and rooms, both indoor and outdoor spaces. A smaller building should be designed, from whole to detail. At the same time, the project aims to further develop knowledge and skills; space, environment, materials, technical systems and sketching are recapitulated, clarified, applied and developed through the project task. Human activities, relationships, measures, abilities, needs and experiences are central aspects. Through the project, design for different types of disability is made aware and trained, both through empathy and compliance with regulations. Through the project, the training is also developed in sketching and presentation.

Learning outcomes (after completion of the course the student should be able to)

ROOM AND BUILDING DESIGN
  • Describe and reflect on own experiences and experiences of housing
  • Describe aesthetic values regarding room design and room contexts related to housing
  • Show completed laboratory sessions where rooms and accommodation have been examined using different artistic means of expression
  • Design a smaller building for residents, from whole to detail, familiar with a spatial context in the city and/or landscape
  • Describe the interaction between indoor and outdoor spaces in relation to the accommodation as a business and function
  • Account for the choice of materials and details in relation to function and expression
  • Refer to authorities' requirements, regulations and applicable norms.

LIVING AND ACTIVITY
  • Analyze and describe accommodation for different people
  • Interpret, identify and translate the analysis into goals or programs for the design
  • Create rooms and room relationships for the business
  • Describing and analyzing different types of disability related to the design of residential cities
  • Apply knowledge related to different disabilities in the project task

THE OUTDOOR SPACE CHARACTER AND DESIGN
  • Students are trained and oriented about the outdoor space's design elements
  • Understanding the interaction between the building and the surrounding conservatory

PROCESS PLANNING
  • Account for the student’s study process before the course
  • Reflection over student’s study process after the course
  • Analyze the learning process in the course
  • Reflect over dedicated knowledge and skills

Content

PROJECT: The Residential building (5,5 hp) (part A)
The design task is about a smaller building for residents and additional function. Central knowledge fields are rooms and room sequences taking into account:
  • functions and flexibility, dimensions, furnishings and movements
  • space organization and design
  • context of the building

In the design process, the student will conduct artistic exercises to investigate spatial phenomena and gain an understanding of sensuous aspects depending on color, light, sound and materiality.

Part DESIGN FOR EVERYONE accessibility (1,5 hp) (del B)

In the design task of the project, accessibility aspects must be developed and applied.

Organisation

The course is conducted and led by the examiner and course coordinator. The course is based on lectures, literature studies, seminars, exercises, study visits, interim reports, partial criticism and final criticism.

Literature

Nylander, Ola: Svensk bostadsarkitektur, Studentlitteratur, 2018.
The literature list is presented on documents on canvas.

Examination including compulsory elements

For approval, participation, reported and approved elements and submitted approved project are required. For lectures generally 80% attendance. The examination takes the form of partial criticism and final criticism.

The course examiner may assess individual students in other ways than what is stated above if there are special reasons for doing so, for example if a student has a decision from Chalmers on educational support due to disability.
