Title: Dust Evolution in Protoplanetary Disks on the Path to Planet Formation.&nbsp;
Abstract: NASA’s Kepler mission found many super-Earth to sub-Neptune sized planets in tightly packed non-resonant orbits close to their host star. Formation of these systems were proven hard to explain by planet migration and the Inside-Out Planet Formation was proposed, where the planets form in situ from coagulation of pebbles trapped at the dead zone inner boundary where the MRI is active.
In this thesis the Python-based program DustPy has been used to simulate dust evolution in order to better understand the microphysics and the first steps of the planet formation process. Compared to previous work, my simulations included a complete spectrum of grain sizes as well as fragmentation.
It was found that higher fragmentation velocities allow for larger dust species which quicker are delivered to the inner disk through gas drag and radial drift. Values and distributions of the dominant grain sizes at different parts of the disk at different times were found as well as the dust mass delivered to the inner disk. At 1au the dominant grain sizes were found to be 0.59cm for 1m/s and 11.06cm for 10m/s at time 0.1Myr, whereas these values remained constant or had reduced to 0.59cm for 1m/s and 0.53cm for 10m/s after 5Myr. The same trend &nbsp;but generally smaller grain sizes were found in the outer disk at 10au. &nbsp;How the delivered dust mass to the inner disk was distributed over different grain sizes was also investigated.

Title:
The Dynamics of Inner Protoplanetary Disks and Protostellar Accretion - Insights from Numerical Simulations using PLUTO.&nbsp;
Abstract: In the T Tauri phase of star formation, the central protostar accretes material from the surrounding protoplanetary disk. The magnetic field of the protostar truncates the disk at a certain truncation radius, r_T, from which material is accreted via funnel flows that follow the magnetic field lines. The theoretical equation for r_T contains a dimensionless parameter, ξ, that captures the physics of the interaction between the magnetic field and the disk.
The aim of the project is to investigate how the calculated r_T and ξ from the simulated T Tauri star compares to theoretical and observed values. Simulations were carried out using the public code PLUTO to solve the conservation laws of magnetohydrodynamics. The mass of the modeled protostar was set to 1 solar mass and the radius to 3 solar radii. Three different stellar magnetic field strengths were used; 500 G, 1000 G and 1500 G. The results show that the average truncation radii throughout the simulations are all &lt;0.1 AU with average accretion rates of ~1e-7 to ~1e-8 solar masses per year. The obtained values of ξ are 1.365, 0.6414 and 0.6970 for the respective B-fields, with the latter two lying in the expected range of 0.5-1 for typical T Tauri stars.

Title: Spectroscopic Survey of the Astrophysics and Astrochemistry of Protostars in Clustered Regions of Massive Star Formation.&nbsp;
Abstract:&nbsp;The goal of this project has been to study a sample of protostellar sources selected from regions of clustered massive star formation, examining the astrophysics and astrochemistry during different stages of their evolution. The primary data are spectroscopic measurements in the frequency range 204-248 GHz, observed with the Submillimeter Array (SMA) interferometer in Hawaii.
Methods have been developed for objective line identification and characterization. The chemical inventory of the sources is presented, including estimates of abundances. The kinematic properties of the species are also discussed. The overall trends from the protostar sample are presented and discussed.

<h3 class="MsoNormal">Abstract:&nbsp;</h3>
Wind power is facing increasing social and political resistance, which limits its location options. However, most energy system models use an optimization approach to determine the location of wind power, prioritizing sites with the best wind conditions. Such an approach does not reflect the socio-political barriers faced by new wind power projects. This thesis investigates if future wind power installations resemble historical installation patterns, how might this affect the cost-competitiveness of wind power in a future renewable electricity system and the corresponding electricity system cost. The results show that considering historical installation patterns for wind power results in a median increase in electricity system cost of 4% for 120 countries, with some countries experiencing a system cost increase of over 20%. Additionally, there is a clear decrease in the share of wind power in the optimal electricity supply mix for 84 countries, with the most significant reduction reaching 24%. These results highlight the importance of considering the impact of socio-political constraints on the location choice for wind power in modeling future energy systems.
