Title of thesis: Minimally invasive microneedle-based devices for monitoring or sampling unique biomarkers in dermal interstitial fluid – Optimizing a continuous glucose monitoring device and an interstitial fluid sampling patch 
Abstract:&nbsp;Microneedle (MN)-based devices offer minimally invasive, cost-effective health monitoring equipment alternatives, with possible applications ranging from diabetes management to traditional blood sampling. Building on previous research, this thesis work optimized a MN-based continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) device and a MN-based dermal interstitial fluid (ISF) microsampling patch. Two experiments were performed for the CGM device. The first assessed three functionalizing coating chemistries for response, sensitivity, variability and repeatability, while the second explored platinum/platinum oxide (Pt/PtOx) as a pseudo-reference electrode (p-RE) material. The ISF sampling patch experiment compared stainless-steel (SS) hypodermic needles from six manufacturers to evaluate their performances when integrated into the proposed patch. In vitro glucose calibration testing for up to nine days revealed that the enzymatic layer of the CGM device containing an additional crosslinker demonstrated the highest average response and the lowest standard deviation, possibly indicating an improved performance requiring further investigation. PtOx layers obtained via cyclic voltammetry (CV) did not yield stable open circuit potential (OCP) curves, making Pt/PtOx unsuitable as a p-RE material. For the ISF sampling patch, needle parameters such as gauge size, bevel length and inner diameter were assessed. The lowest obtained average sampling time for the single needle sampling patch was 3 minutes and 29 seconds. Using a three needle array sampling device decreased the average sampling time. The proposed minimally invasive MN-based CGM device shows promise in providing diabetic patients with an affordable, accessible and less invasive real-time glucose monitoring device. The presented minimally invasive, decentralized self-sampling technique of dermal ISF offers an alternative cost-effective multi-analyte analysis solution due to the strong correlation between ISF and blood for various biomarkers.

Title of thesis: State-of-the-Art Bioacoustic Classification of nordic Bats and Birds using Machine Learning
 Abstract: This thesis presents the development of state-of-the-art bioacoustic classification algorithms for Nordic birds and bats, designed to outperform existing global solutions through regional specialization. By focusing exclusively on species relevant to Nordic biodiversity, the research addresses fundamental limitations in current approaches that sacrifice regional accuracy for global coverage. The classification framework leverages a combination of sophisticated audio processing techniques, extensive data augmentation strategies, and integration of historical observation data through spatial-temporal weighting mechanisms. Through systematic experimental studies, optimal parameters and design decisions were identified for both bird and bat classification tasks. The system achieves 81.6% balanced accuracy for bird species classification and 96.3% for bat species identification, substantially outperforming existing solutions such as BirdNET (59.8%) and commercial bat identification systems like BTO (79.8%). These results demonstrate that regional specialization provides a more effective approach to bioacoustic classification compared to global models, offering immediate practical benefits for biodiversity monitoring and conservation efforts in Nordic countries. The developed algorithms represent a significant advancement in automated species identification technology that can enhance ecological research and environmental assessment capabilities throughout the region.
