A Literature Study on Common Axial Flux Topologies and an Experimental Study on Designing Axial Flux Machines by Jesper Bergström and Ruben Willner &nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp; Wednesday, April 16, 09:00-10:00, Room Analysen, room number 3224&nbsp;&nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp; Opponent: Anton Bengtsson &nbsp;&nbsp; Abstract&nbsp; Formula Student is a student engineering competition for universities worldwide, in which Chalmers participates. Chalmers’ car is under continuous development with a high-end electric powertrain. However, its current hub machines and gearboxes have room for improvement in terms of both weight and overall performance. Hence, this study aims to design a prototype electrical machine with an axial flux topology to replace the current radial machine and gearbox. The machine’s requirements and ideal characteristics were determined by analysing the vehicle’s current wheel package and previous drive cycles. Furthermore, a comprehensive literature review identified the common YASA type and a less common hybrid flux topology as the most promising topologies of axial flux machines. The proposed machine designs were developed through an iterative process involving analytical calculations and different types of 2D/3D FEM simulations. Additionally, different design methods have been evaluated. It was concluded that certain types of 2D simulations have the potential to accurately replace the 3D simulations while reducing both time consumption and the required computational power during the iterative process. This 2D simulation method was&nbsp;further implemented using an automatic iteration script to find a suitable machine design, corresponding to the set requirements of the machine. Finally, an electromagnetic design&nbsp;of a YASA topology was found that fulfilled these requirements, while also being operable at rated operation without risk of overheating. Some key characteristics of the machine are the specific torque densities of 29.1 Nm/kg at rated operation and 91.4 Nm/kg at peak operation. All while keeping the total active weight around 4.3 kg and the rated operation efficiency at 93%. Future work will focus on further validation and mechanical design before potential implementation in the Chalmers Formula Student car.&nbsp;
