During the spring semester five students have worked with different research projects in a Research Associate programme hosted by Johan Malmqvist, Co-Director Area of Advance Production. The purpose of the programme is to enable talented students from our master programmes to obtain some experience from research activities, such as developing research plans, carrying out simulations or experiments, analyzing data and presenting or publishing the results and findings.

The final Project seminar was held on May 26, 2023. The projects were:

Mapping the Supply Chain of Critical Raw Materials in Semiconductors for the European Vehicle Market to Support Circular Economy Strategies
Student: Gerardo Lopez
Faculty Advisor: Maria Ljunggren

Evaluating In-Situ Monitoring for L-PBF Live
Student: Erik Sievers
Faculty Advisors: Marina Papatriantafilou, Eduard Hryha

An Exploratory Study on Digital Twin-driven Product Realization
Student: Juan González
Faculty Advisors: Ebru Bekar, Anders Skoogh

Geometric Assurance of Battery Production to Improve Performance
Student: Ganesh Kumar
Faculty Advisor: Kristina Wärmefjord

Simulation Study for Optimization of Screening Performance
Student: Arvint Kumar Kumaravel
Faculty Advisor: Gauti Asbjörnsson

Both students and faculty advisors from each research project were present at the seminar. The students presented the scope, methods, and results of their work. There was also time for questions. In this way, it was possible to share insights between the projects.

Beyond the research results, the student’s own experiences and findings were that it was an excellent opportunity to get a glimpse of how an actual research project is performed and to put the knowledge acquired from the master’s studies in a real research context. They were learning about working as a researcher, collaborating with researchers from your area of interest and getting to know scientific communication.

Their advice to future students is to apply to this programme as it is an excellent opportunity to get a taste of what it would be like to work as a researcher, understand how different stakeholders can benefit from research projects and learn about research methodology, not to mention the fact that a salary is paid for the work, which is always welcome for a student.

“This project was a great experience that allowed me to exercise my critical thinking as well as my ability to work independently,” says Gerardo López Pinto.

Application for next year’s Research Associate programme will open in November 2023. Look out for more information during the autumn.
