Since end of January, six students have worked with different research projects in the Research Associate programme hosted by Johan Malmqvist, profile leader for education in the Production Area of Advance.

The purpose of the programme is to enable talented students from our master programmes to obtain some experience from research activities, such as developing research plans, carrying out simulations or experiments, analyzing data and presenting or publishing the results and findings.

The final project seminar was held on May 17, 2024.

The projects were:

Optimization of an innovative direct air capture technology
Student: Flinto Justin
Faculty Advisor: Diana Bernin

Collaborative design for sustainable and circular solutions
Student: Huan Wang
Faculty Advisors: Sophie Isaksson Hallstedt

VirKA - physical, cognitive, and social effects of virtual knowledge work in a Virtual Reality (VR) environment
Student: Sylvia Xie
Faculty Advisor: Cecilia Berlin

Automated inspection and evaluation of Electric Vehicle batteries for second life
Student: Sandra Jaksic
Faculty Advisor: Johan Stahre

Autonomous mobile robots
Student: Osama Al Sheihk Ali
Faculty Advisor: Knut Åkesson

Development of graphene coating on metal powders for additive manufacturing and thermal spraying
Student: Gowtham Sowrirajan
Faculty Advisor: Uta Klement

Both students and faculty advisors from the research projects were present at the seminar. The students presented the scope, methods, and results of their work. There was also time for questions. In this way, it was possible to share insights between the projects.

Both personal and professional development

In addition to the research results, the students experienced that the work was both challenging and rewarding. The students felt that the work met and, in some cases, even exceeded their expectations. They gained insights, learned to collaborate with researchers and learned to solve unexpected situations that could arise along the way.

Their advice to future students is to apply to this programme as it is a great opportunity for both personal and professional growth.

“This research associate experience was a comprehensive and enriching journey that significantly contributed to my academic and professional aspirations.” says Osama Alsheikh.

Application for next year’s Research Associate programme will open in November 2024. Look out for more information during the autumn.
