Two million SEK from the Swedish Research Council to evaluate AI-based diagnostic methods in healthcare

The Swedish Research Council has decided which applications have been awarded grants for proof of concept in the field of infection in 2024. Erik Kristiansson and Anna Johnning from Mathematical Sciences in Gothenburg have been awarded grants for AI-based diagnostic methods in healthcare.

The researchers have received funding for the research project Clinical evaluation of AI-based decision support for the treatment of infections caused by antibiotic-resistant bacteria. They have developed an AI-based method for easier identification of multi-resistant bacteria, and now receive funding to evaluate the method in healthcare within the framework of the project. 

Antibiotic resistance is a problem in healthcare

In severe infections, doctors often have to start antibiotic treatment immediately, before they know for sure which treatment is effective. It is the hope that in the future, the AI-based diagnostic tool could be used in hospitals, for example, to help identify resistant bacteria and assist doctors in choosing an effective treatment.
