With his internationally recognised research in semiconductors and future telecommunications, Jan Stake, professor of Terahertz and millimetre wave technology at MC2, has been appointed Visiting Fellow at the National Physical Laboratory in the UK.

A few days ago, the National Physical Laboratory (NPL) in England announced its first two Visiting Fellows, one of whom is Jan Stake, Professor and Division Head of the Terahertz and Millimeter Wave Laboratory at MC2. For three years, starting in October, he will be conducting research at the Department of Electromagnetic and Electrochemical Engineering (EET) at NPL.

“It feels great and of course exciting to learn more about NPL. The group at NPL are experts in microwave measurement technology, so I look forward to learning more about their methods and how we together can apply and refine our experiments in the THz area in the Kollberg lab,” says Jan Stake.

With a particular focus on semiconductors and future telecommunications, Jan's research matches the "five critical technologies" identified by the UK government. The development of test and measurement capabilities to support the UK's 5G and 6G telecommunications infrastructure, exploiting broader bandwidths and higher terahertz frequencies, is featured in NPL’s Metrology Research Roadmap.

Through the Visiting Fellow program, the collaboration between NPL and Chalmers University of Technology will be strengthened in metrology for cutting-edge semiconductor electronics up to terahertz frequencies, on-wafer measurement of integrated circuits, the development of standards for new types of terahertz transmission lines as well as in the identification of future trends in the field of millimetre wave and terahertz technology and related research collaboration initiatives.

In addition to Jan Stake, Dr. Akira Fujiwara, who is active at NTT Basic Research Laboratories in Japan, has also been appointed as a Visiting Fellow at NPL.
