Chalmers’ maritime education and the simulators used in teaching will remain at Lindholmen, while the university’s other programmes will move to campus Johanneberg in the autumn term of 2025.
In 2023, Chalmers, RISE, and the Swedish Maritime Administration signed a letter of intent to strengthen collaboration in research and education at a maritime simulator center for shipping. A development project within the university has now shown that there are advantages to developing maritime education in collaboration with the maritime sector and that this should continue to take place at Lindholmen. The next step will be to investigate, among other things, the organisational placement of maritime education within Chalmers. This work is now starting within the Department of Mechanics and Maritime Sciences and is expected to be completed by May 2024.
“It is very positive that opportunities are now opening up in several interesting ways for maritime education,” says Jörgen Blennow, Vice President for Education and Lifelong Learning. “We now intend for programmes closely related to the maritime infrastructure, that is the courses for naval commanders, naval engineers and sea captains, to remain at Lindholmen in the long term. When it comes to the location of the courses in International logistics and Maritime management, we need to investigate more details before any decision can be made. We will keep our students informed as soon as more details are available.”
Maritime education, as certificate programmes, has a specific nature with special needs and conditions compared to Chalmers’ general educational offerings. Notably, the education is conducted closely and in collaboration with the maritime sector. Additionally, there has been extensive activity in lifelong learning, such as contract education and professional training, for a long time.
The overall decision to gather Chalmers’ education at Johanneberg remains unchanged, and the focus of the ongoing project “A unified campus” has not changed in any way. A separate unit for maritime education could be a way to strengthen the future node of collaboration and innovation that Lindholmen is intended to become for Chalmers.
