“For Chalmers University of Technology to be invited as one of fourteen founding partners in EOREA is a clear signal that Chalmers' competence in the marine and maritime area is in demand,” says Ida-Maja Hassellöv who, along with Anders Palmqvist, is on site at the EU Parliament in Brussels to participate in the launch of the European Ocean Research and Education Alliance.

The official launch of EOREA, European Ocean Research and Education Alliance, took place on Thursday 8 December - with the overarching aim of addressing global and European challenges facing the ocean.
The Alliance, made up by fourteen European key players in the ocean research and education sector - including Chalmers, have agreed to launch the alliance to facilitate Europe’s Ocean Research community in working together, thus participating in the implementation of the 2030 United Nations Agenda for Sustainable Development.

On site to at the EU Parliament to participate in the launch were Ida-Maja Hassellöv, professor of maritime studies, and Anders Palmqvist, Vice President of research and Areas of Advance at Chalmers, who was also responsible for the official signing on behalf of Chalmers.

“For Chalmers University of Technology to be invited as one of fourteen founding partners in EOREA is a clear signal that Chalmers' competence in the marine and maritime area is in demand, and further points to the need for an increased coordination internally, through Chalmers Ocean,” says Ida -Maja Hassellöv, who will be a member on the alliance's strategic board.

To achieve its vision, the alliance will aim to strengthen, expand, and optimise EU Ocean research and education capabilities through the sharing of world-class national facilities in Europe and the joint realisation of Pan-European programmes open to all interested European R&I and Education stakeholders.

Chalmers, together with Aalto University in Finland, will lead the thematic area on shipping, while NTNU in Norway will lead a corresponding area on aquaculture and seafood. Present and speaking during the launch in Brussels were, among others, EU parliamentarian Maria Da Graca Carvalho, EU commissioner for innovation, research, culture, education and youth Mariya Gabriel, and Anne Borg, rector of the Norwegian University of Technology NTNU.
