Yvonne Nygård, Associate Professor of Industrial Biotechnology at Chalmers, is one of eight prominent younger researchers in Sweden to be elected member of the Young Academy of Sweden 2023.
“This is a fantastic opportunity to influence and really be able to work to improve researchers’ everyday life, and to work for visibility in society for research. In addition, I have heard that the work is a lot of fun,” says Yvonne Nygård.
Utilisation and industrial collaboration
The Young Academy of Sweden is interdisciplinary academy describing itself as an independent platform that provides young researchers with a strong voice in the debate and that promotes science and research in society, often focusing on children and young adults.
“In the academy I would like to work with utilisation as a part of research and also focus on collaboration between academy and industry,” says Yvonne Nygård.
Yvonne Nygård and her research group develop microorganisms, yeasts, or filamentous fungi, to be used as industrial cell factories. The microorganisms are designed genetically for sustainable industrial production of bio chemicals, pharmaceuticals, or food ingredients. The group also have a focus on optimising bioprocesses in bioreactors.
"Collaboration needed more than ever"
The members of the Young Academy of Sweden are elected for five years and there are currently 38 members from different research areas.
“It will be fun and meaningful to get a chance to know and collaborate with new people, to meet researchers from different disciplines and universities around Sweden,” says Yvonne Nygård.
These collaborations are the strength of the academy, according to the academy's chair, Ronnie Bengtsson, Associate Professor of medical Biochemistry and Biophysics at Umeå University.
“We are honored and proud to welcome our new members. There is a lot happening in society and research now, and we need young academies collaborating worldwide more than ever,” he says in a press release from the Young Academy of Sweden.
