On October 11, Information- and Communication Technology Area of Advance hosted the seminar Navigating the cybersecurity landscape at Chalmers.

Prominent researchers on the subject, from several European universities guided almost three hundred participants in the auditorium RunAn at Chalmers Conference Center on the path to security excellence and gave valuable insights.

Encryption and access

First up was David Basin, ETH Zürich, who spoke of the paths of data on the internet and the importance of control and encryption. He demonstrated the Scion Internet Architecture, a new approach to Interdomain routing, designed for security.

Thereafter, Elena Pagnin, Chalmers, continued on the cryptography track by emphasizing the importance of provable cryptography to secure all steps. After all, the weakest link in the chain is man!

Marc Stöttinger, RheinMain University of Applied Sciences, took up the relay baton and spoke of the effects of agile cryptography in, for example, the automotive industry.

Simone Fischer-Hübner, Chalmers and Karlstads University, talked about the challenges of managing access permission. Simone is a member of the planning group for the upcoming Cyber campus that the Swedish government has decided on. This group also includes Pontus Johnson, KTH, who addressed the topic in his talk Securing Our Digital Future: The Essential Role of Research and Innovation in Cybersecurity.

Research, innovation and education are essential!

Vulnerability and attacks

After lunch, it was time for Tamara Rezk, from Inria in France and visiting professor at Chalmers University of Technology, to give us a crash course in CPU in her talk on spectre attacks.

Last out of the speakers was Marija Furdek, Chalmers, who began with the question "Is the internet physical?" She spoke on security of the infrastructure of optical networks and whether we can handle the truth?

Summarizing panel

The day wrapped up with a panel discussion on the day's topics, where the industry also participated in the form of Nasser Nowdehi, Volvo Group, Kim Strandberg, Volvo Cars, Behrooz Sangchoolie, RISE Research Institutes of Sweden, Jonas Magazinius, Assured AB.
