The Genie Action Toolbox launched on January 21st, is an innovative tool designed to help students and staff at Chalmers take practical steps toward improving gender inclusion.
Created by students in the Computer Science and Engineering department with support from the Genie Lab, the Toolbox uses artificial intelligence to provide actionable advice based on scientific research. This system, called “Genie AI”, looks at scientific articles and gives advice based on the user’s questions. Users can chat with Genie AI online to get tips and suggestions for actions that promote gender inclusion.
Genie is a project funded by Chalmers with a clear mission: to increase the number of female faculty members, eliminate barriers that hinder women’s careers, and create a diverse and inclusive working environment. The Genie Action Toolbox is one of the tools now developed to support these goals.
Turning ideas into action
The process began when the Genie project identified the need for a tool to support gender inclusion. Jasmina Maric, senior lecturer in Interaction Design at the Computer Science and Engineering department, proposed the idea and initiated a master’s thesis to explore how technology could help empower individuals.
"Discrimination has no place—whether at Chalmers, in education, the workplace, or society as a whole. We are committed to taking action and driving change through what we do best—innovation. To make a real impact, we developed the Genie Action Toolbox—an advanced AI tool built on the latest technology and scientific insights," says Jasmina Maric.
The first master’s thesis, made by students from the master´s program Interaction Design and Technologies, produced a prototype which was supported by Genie and became the foundation for the Toolbox. Building on this initial work, the Genie Lab was established. The Lab brought together bachelor’s and master’s students from the Computer Science and Engineering department. Together, they transformed the prototype into fully functional software.
The Genie Lab continues to grow, and two new master’s students are now analyzing how users interact with AI and the ethical considerations of these interactions.
Who Can Use the Toolbox?
Initially, the Toolbox is available to students and employees at Chalmers, allowing them to test and provide feedback. The team plans to refine the tool continuously, making it even more effective over time. Eventually, the goal is to expand its availability beyond Chalmers. Right now, the team are actively working on establishing an EU consortium to test and refine Genie AI within academic settings.
“The Genie Action Toolbox is the first AI-driven tool for gender inclusion that we know of, sparking significant interest and opening exciting opportunities for collaboration.” says Jasmina Maric.
“Gender-based exclusion remains a persistent issue in many professional environments, slowing societal progress. By joining forces, we accelerate change—because together, we are stronger, smarter, and faster in building a more inclusive future. Better worlds are possible!” Jasmina Maric concludes.
