The profile area focuses on issues of how to ensure access to safe water for all, sustainable aquatic environments and adaptation to a changing climate.

Access to safe water, sanitation and hygiene is essential for human health and well-being. Water resources are threatened by rising water demands, climate change enhanced droughts and pollution by persistent and mobile contaminants in the environment. In addition, climate change also increases the risk of flood damage.

Research needs to support the development of infrastructure for water and wastewater management, improved consumption patterns and planning approaches that support the preservation of water resources through a resilient and sustainable water cycle while minimising environmental pollution and the impacts of climate change.
