Cryptography has an important role for the cybersecurity

Cybersecurity is a constantly urgent topic, and it is becoming increasingly important in line with the increasing digitalization of society. Chalmers University of Technology has identified cryptography as a fundamental skill in the area of cybersecurity and started the Crypto Team last fall. Head of this team is Elena Pagnin, Assistant Professor at Chalmers. She is also one of the speakers at the initiative seminar Navigating the Cybersecurity landscape hosted by Chalmers Information and Communication Technology Area of Advance (ICT) in October.

David Basin is a full professor of Computer Science at ETH Zurich, since 2003. His research areas are Information Security and Software Engineering. He is the founding director of the ZISC, the Zurich Information Security Center, which he led from 2003-2011. He served as Editor-in-Chief of the ACM Transactions on Privacy and Security (2015-2020) and of Springer-Verlag's book series on Information Security and Cryptography (2008-present). He has co-founded three security companies, is on the board of directors of Anapaya Systems AG, and on various management and scientific advisory boards. He is an IEEE Fellow and an ACM Fellow.
Pontus Johnson is a professor at the KTH Royal Institute of Technology in Stockholm, Sweden. He is the director of the Center for Cyber Defense and Information Security at KTH, a collaboration with the Swedish Armed Forces and a number of other government agencies. He is also a member of the Swedish Royal Academy of Engineering Sciences (IVA). In 2014, Pontus co-founded Foreseeti, a research spin-off company developing cyber security attack simulation software, subsequently acquired by Google. In 2022 as well as 2023, Tech Awards Sweden listed him among the 50 most influential people in Swedish tech. Pontus spends 20% of his work time at Google. In the remaining 80%, he is a faculty member of the Division of Network and Systems Engineering at the Department of Computer Science in the School of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science at KTH.
Marc Stöttinger is a professor at RheinMain University of Applied Sciences. He has a strong background in applied security research and cryptographic technology. During his time at Continental AG from 2016 to 2020, he founded and chaired the "Hardware Security Technology Board", a company-wide technical steering committee responsible for harmonizing product security solutions and innovations across the entire product portfolio. His primary research interests focus on system-level embedded system security, with a particular emphasis on secure implementations of security primitives such as post-quantum cryptographic algorithms. This includes investigating implementation resistance to physical cryptanalysis methods such as side-channel attacks and fault attacks.
Tamara Rezk is a research director at Inria and a part-time lecturer at Université Côte d’Azur, Sophia Antipolis, France. Since 2023, she is also a WASP guest professor at Chalmers, Gothenburg, Sweden. Her main research interests are in the field of system security. She has supervised Ph.D. students on topics such as static and dynamic security analyses, web security, formal methods for security, and provable cryptography. She currently focuses her research on defenses and principled methods to deal with microarchitectural attacks, and web application attacks.
Elena Pagnin is an Assistant Professor at Chalmers University of Technology (Gothenburg, Sweden) since 2022. Her research is focused on the design of new cryptographic protocols and public key cryptography. She is interested in homomorphic cryptosystems, data authentication and user privacy. Marija Furdek is an Assistant Professor at the Department of Electrical Engineering at Chalmers University of Technology since 2019, following a six-year stint as a senior researcher at KTH Royal Institute of Technology. Her research is focused on intelligent management of optical network infrastructure security as the backbone of today’s information society, with an emphasis on breach prevention through network design and provisioning, as well as AI/ML-based methods for attack detection and mitigation. She is a PI and/or work package or task leader of multiple projects aimed at improving the achievable levels of photonic network infrastructure, funded by a Starting Grant from the Swedish Research Council and by the European Commission (5G-TACTIC, TeraFlow).
Simone Fischer-Hübner is a Guest Professor at Chalmers University of Technoloy and has been a Full Professor at Karlstad University since June 2000, where she is the head of the Privacy &amp; Security (PriSec) research group. She has been conducting research in privacy, cyber security and privacy-enhancing technologies for more than 35 years. She is member of Cybersecurity Council of the Swedish Civil Contingency Agency (MSB), board member of Swedish Cybernode and the Swedish Data Protection Forum (Forum för Dataskydd), member of the planning group for Cybercampus Sweden and member of the board for the Privacy Enhancing Technology Symposia (PETS) and for the NordSec conferences. Moreover, she is the Swedish representative of IFIP (International Federation for Information Processing) TC 11 (Security and Privacy Protection) and the IFIP TC 11 treasurer and vice chair. She has been partner of several EU Horizon cybersecurity and privacy projects including CyberSec4Europe and Privacy&amp;Us, for which she was the scientific coordinator. Moreover, she coordinates the Swedish IT Security Network for PhD students and researchers (SWITS) and the Swedish industrial graduate school on cybersecurity (SIGS-CyberSec).

Title: A New Internet, for Real! Speaker: David Basin, ETH Zurich
The Internet was designed without security in mind.  It is a simple matter for attackers to hijack network address spaces, reroute traffic, and carry out denial of service attacks against networked sites and services.  We present the Scion Internet Architecture, a new approach to Interdomain routing, designed for security from the ground up, which solves these problems and more.  Scion arose from a concerted 10+ year research effort at ETH Zurich.  The results of this research are available today and Scion is in production, being used for critical services in Europe like Swiss Interbank Clearning and in the healthcare sector.  Moreover, all companies and administrations can now profit from using Scion to have a much more secure, reliable, and performant Internet.
 
Title: Securing Our Digital Future: The Essential Role of Research and Innovation in Cybersecurity Speaker: Pontus Johnson, KTH
While much of the public discussion on cybersecurity revolves around activities such as cyber hygiene, threat intelligence and incident management, long-term solutions require a deeper understanding of the root causes of the problem. In this talk, we argue that the dominant source of the cybersecurity troubles facing society today is cognitive complexity. This argument, supported by illustrative examples, leads to the view that research and innovation constitute the only hope for significant improvement of the security of society's digital infrastructure.
 
Title: The Impact of Crypto Agility on Cybersecurity Speaker: Marc Stöttinger, RheinMain University of Applied Sciences
Over the years, cryptography has proven to be a solid foundation for developing preventive security measures against attacks on IT and cyber-physical systems. However, the emergence of large-scale quantum computing poses a new threat that renders current asymmetric cryptographic algorithms insecure in the long term. This shift in the cybersecurity threat landscape emphasizes the importance of crypto-agility; a secure exchange of cryptographic algorithms. This necessitates a paradigm shift in designing secure cybersecurity applications, as the distinctions between preventive security and operational security measures are becoming increasingly blurred. In this talk, I will discuss the ongoing changes associated with the transition to post-quantum cryptography and why crypto agility is essential for cybersecurity.
 
Title: Spectre Attacks and Beyond: why they stand apart and implications Speaker: Tamara Rezk, Chalmers and INRIA
Since the disclosure of Spectre attacks in 2018, both academia and industry have made considerable efforts to defend against all variants of these attacks.
This presentation offers a user-friendly introduction to elucidate these attacks and explore the unresolved challenges and ramifications they pose for the industry.
 
Title: Fortifying the Digital Fortress: Provably Secure Cryptography Speaker: Elena Pagnin, Chalmers
A successful attack shows that the cryptographic scheme under consideration is insecure. However, if no attack is (yet) found, does it mean that the scheme is secure? Provable secure cryptography aims at identifying a sequence of mathematically rigorous implications that logically proves the scheme design is not vulnerable to any attacks. In this talk, I will present a quick overview of recent research results in provable security and discuss their connection to cybersecurity.
 
Title: Security of optical network infrastructure: Can we handle the truth? Speaker: Marija Furdek, Chalmers
Despite the huge significance of optical network infrastructure as the only future-proof technology capable of supporting the immense growth data traffic rates, their vulnerability to physical-layer attacks is often neglected. This talk presents an overview of attack techniques targeting the fiber-based network infrastructure and discusses approaches for minimizing the impact of such attacks, detecting their presence, and mitigating them.
 
Title: Usable Access Permission Management Speaker: Simone Fischer-Hübner, Chalmers and KAU
Defining and managing fine-granular access permissions is important for avoiding data leakages, but also often constitute a usability challenge for users. Especially in smart environment with multiple IoT devices and context-dependent security and privacy risks that are hard to predict and assess. 
This talk presents and discusses approaches for enhancing the usability of access permission management with the help of (semi-)automation.
