Aim

The aim of the course is to provide the student with a general understanding for the interaction group/individual/head/leader and the function and framework of organisations.

Learning outcomes (after completion of the course the student should be able to)

- Explain how we understand ourselves in relation to how we understand others
- Explain the principles for how people with different backgrounds interact from an intercultural perspective
- Explain the principles of communication to understand and make oneself understood
- Be able to give and receive feedback
- Describe group dynamics and conditions for collective action
- Explain basic leadership principles
- Explain the meanings of leadership theories and the relationship between bing the leader and being appointed as the head.
- Explain the meaning of employeehood
- Identify important factors for collaboration

Content

- The main idea in the course is to go from how we how we understand ourselves, via communication and feedback to group theory to leadership. This is the basic block. Then the managerial aspect, conflict management, legislation, learning in organizations are dealt with. One of the assignments will be preparatory lesson planning for the course Safety and Security Officer, which is given during the study period of a subsequent training year in the Sea Captain program.
- The perspectives that will permeate the course are to understand others through themselves (the intercultural perspective), the gender perspective and the leadership perspective. The intention is to persuade the student to translate theory into developed thoughts about what this means for himself or herself in his or her future professional practice.

Organisation

In the course there will be several different parts; lectures, exercises, and role play. The central form of work will be the seminar where one will study a specific material (text, video or pod) and write a reflective text on the topic that is submitted before the seminar where it is discussed.
 
Great emphasis will be placed on the art of reasoning based on specific premises. In the seminars, you will be approved if you have presented the material and put a personal reflection on it. The reflection does not have to be in line with what the teacher's opinion is on the issue, as long as the argument for the position is well substantiated and opinions and premises can be clearly distinguished.
