Eligibility

General entry requirements for bachelor's level (first cycle)
Applicants enrolled in a programme at Chalmers where the course is included in the study programme are exempted from fulfilling the requirements above.

Specific entry requirements

The same as for the programme that owns the course.
Applicants enrolled in a programme at Chalmers where the course is included in the study programme are exempted from fulfilling the requirements above.

Aim

The course aims to strengthen participant’s knowledge of mathematics and to provide them with knowledge of basic probability theory and statistical methods applicable to technology and social sciences. The main purpose of the mathematics module is to strengthen participant’s knowledge of those areas of mathematics that are used in the statistics module of the course.

Learning outcomes (after completion of the course the student should be able to)

  • Plan the gathering of data
  • Utilise descriptive statistical tools and statistical methods to describe and interpret data
  • Explain the effect randomness has on different scenarios, for example on measurements
  • Utilise and explain mathematical concepts within mathematical statistics, as well as have knowledge of definitions, and to be able to perform mathematical computations based on concepts introducted during the course.

Content

The course comprises three modules: introductory mathematical analysis, introductory mathematical statistics and a project work. The introductory mathematical analysis addresses the following concepts: variable, function, limit, derivative and integral as well as infinitesimal calculus, methods of integration, with a view to basic probability theory such as density function and distribution function, expected value and variance. The introductory mathematical statistics addresses the concepts random variable, normal distribution, interval estimator, linear regression and principles of hypothesis testing. The project work analyses data gathered in a previous course, or some other data source of the social sciences, by utilising methods introduced during the course.

Organisation

The course is given in the format of lectures, practicals and a few sessions devoted to assistance with the project work.

Examination including compulsory elements

The course is examined by a written exam, graded using the scale TH. To obtain a final grade the project work needs to have obtained a pass grade.

The course examiner may assess individual students in other ways than what is stated above if there are special reasons for doing so, for example if a student has a decision from Chalmers on educational support due to disability.
