Course specific prerequisites

Electrical machines - design and analysis (ENM056) and Electric drive systems (ENM076) or or equivalent courses.
In addition to these courses the student should fulfill the course specific prerequisites for MPEPO in the Admission Regulations.

Aim

The aim of this course is to understand a practical problem about how to design and build electrical machines. Collaboration in groups of different compositions as well as written and oral presentation of the results is part of the course.

Learning outcomes (after completion of the course the student should be able to)

  • Formulate a technical specification for an electric machine based on requirements
  • Using adapted software, be able to design an electrical machine based on a technical specification.
  • Perform analysis of an electrical machine using current and voltage feeding of the machine
  • Consider and include manufacturing effects in the design process
  • Describe and comment the impact of various optimisation goals on the design
  • Determine losses in a torque -speed diagram as well as in load cycles
  • Reflect over the value creation made for others
  • Show an ability to within the project make judgements considering sustainable developments and ethical aspects through:
    • Reflection and critical judgement of relevant dimensions of sustainable development
    • Handle scientific writing in an ethically defendable way, for instance related to plagiarism and authorship.
    • Utilise ethical principles for data acquisition, analysis and result presentation.
  • Present and defend the selected design solution in front of an audience that could be anything between engineering colleagues and managers. 

Content

The course is based on the design process of an electrical machine, from specification to verification and improvement proposals. A PMSM and an induction machine is to be designed for the application. The evaluation criteria can vary between the years, but efficiency and sustainability are always perspectives to be included. The course is based on the CDIO thinking in a digital environment.

Organisation

The course conduction is based on applications using a pmsm as well as an induction machine, with different requirements between the student groups. The machine is to be modelled both in Maxwell as well as Motorcad, in order to determine the parameters need for design and evaluation. In parallel with the practical work there is also a shorter lecture series, linked to the project development. The lectures will treat both the design process as well as other important (application specific) aspects.
