Aim
The course gives the student an extension within the ämnesstråket Vattenresurser och vattenteknik and application in lärsekvensen Hållbar utveckling. Knowledge from mainly ämnesstråken Samhällsplanering och infrastruktur samt Markresurser och markteknik will be applied in the course. The course builds on Urban space and functions and Mechanics.
The course aims for students to acquire basic knowledge of fluid mechanics. The knowledge will be applied to explain, dimension and critically examine parts of the water and sewage technological systems. The student will also be able to identify important aspects with regard to the use of the water and sewage technological systems with regard to critical events and sustainable development.
Learning outcomes (after completion of the course the student should be able to)
After completing the course students will be able to:- Describe and use hydrostatics for incompressible fluids to calculate the loads caused by water pressure.
- Define and explain equations for fluid mechanics.
- Explain and apply the general principles for the transport mechanisms of dissolved and particulate matter in water and wastewater engineering context.
- Apply knowledge of fluid mechanics to dimension the pipes, reservoirs and pumps in water and wastewater engineering context.
- Calculate and design flows in rivers, canals and pipes by applying your knowledge of fluid mechanics.
- Critically review the technical solutions of systems of water systems in terms of capacity, functionality and performance.
- Apply the knowledge in fluid mechanics to explain how water occurs in the built environment and in nature in order to design sustainable water supply and sewerage systems from an ethical and sustainable view point.
Content
Applications in the course Hydraulics and Water Resources is based on the water cycle in the city (drinking water, wastewater, storm water).Basic theory for hydrostatic and fluid mechanics are reviewed. This knowledge is applied to calculate the loads caused by water pressure in water and wastewater engineering systems and design pressure systems and pumps. Basic theory for channel flow are reviewed and applied knowledge in the design of canals and drainage systems. Existing theories in the design of stormwater systems are reviewed and applied. General principles for transport mechanisms are reviewed to understand how loose and particulate materials are transported in water and wastewater engineering context.
From an ethical and sustainable approach, used knowledge of hydrostatic and fluid mechanics to explain how water occurs in the city and in nature in order to design effective water management systems which can handle current and future loads such as, for example, a changing climate and a growing city.
Organisation
The course consists of the following learning activities:Theories are presented in lectures in connection with practical examples.
Training sessions for deep learning of the theory and problem solving.
Practical application of the hydraulic phenomena being studied are shown through laboratory and field trips.
Practical application of the hydraulic phenomena when planning sustainable water supply and sewerage systems in the built environment is shown through field trips and seminars.
Written exam
