Do you want to work with space, earth, energy and sustainable development? Do you dream about making a difference? The Department of Space, Earth and Environment's goal is to educate engineers that can contribute to a sustainable, fair and environmentally friendly society. We offer a wide range of courses in space, geoscience, energy, environment and complex systems, at undergraduate level and for doctoral studies.

Undergraduate studies at Space, Earth and Environment

We give courses at both basic and advanced levels within several educational programmes. All departments supervise master's theses within their respective research areas.

The department teaches in the following master's programmes

Complex adaptive systems

The human brain, economic markets, our immune systems — even the formation of clouds. These are all examples of complex adaptive systems, formed from multiple interacting components, often nonlinear and dynamic, leading to a collective structure and organisation across multiple levels. With a truly interdisciplinary approach, encompassing several theoretical frameworks, this master’s programme will provide you with a broad and thorough introduction to the theory of complex adaptive systems and their application to the world around us.

Industrial ecology

Climate change and environmental impacts resulting from land use, materials, chemicals, and energy are immensely complex issues, placing enormous pressures on the planet and our ways of living. When coupled with rapid social changes and developments in technology, economics, and environmental policy, the demand for expert knowledge and skills in these areas is vast. By studying industrial ecology at Chalmers University of Technology, you will contribute to how humanity can face these issues, through analysing and developing sustainable technical solutions to be implemented by industry, governmental agencies, and researchers.

Physics

Would you like to operate at the forefront of technological innovations? To contribute with scientific solutions to the known and unknown problems of the future? This master's programme will give you extensive training in modern physics, preparing you to take on such exciting and demanding challenges. You will learn to identify and explain general aspects of physics that are integral to applications in engineering and natural sciences. Furthermore, learn how to identify relevant theoretical, computational, and experimental methods and apply these to problem-solving across a wide range of fields.

Sustainable energy systems

Global warming and declining fossil-fuel resources have placed the development and implementation of sustainable energy systems at the top of the political agenda worldwide. Major investments in new energy technologies and systems will revolutionise our societies and economies in the coming decades. With unique research facilities and instruction from world-leading researchers and industry professionals, this state-of-the-art education will prepare you to operate at the forefront of that revolution.

Wireless, photonics and space engineering

The world is undergoing a fourth industrial revolution. Digital data is the new capital, and the internet has become a resource every bit as precious as water or electricity. This master’s programme will train you to become a technology innovator, developing and innovating concepts to form the core of the next generation of cell phones, antennas, quantum computers, sensors, robots, communication systems and satellites. The programme does not aim to provide you with all the answers — rather, to help you ask the right questions. You will graduate as an expert in wireless and photonics technologies and find yourself in high demand in areas including the aerospace, medical and automotive industries.

Doctoral studies at Space, Earth and Environment

Doctoral studies in our graduate schools aim to provide society - mainly academia and industry - with researchers with top skills in research methodology who combine in-depth knowledge of certain subjects with a broad perspective of the overall research field.

We offer doctoral programmes in the following graduate schools:

Energy, Environment and Systems

Do you have an interest in sustainable development? Then you should apply for a doctoral program in Energy, Environment, and Systems.

Radio and Space Sciences

Are you interested in different measurements and methods for studying the earth's environment? Do you want to develop your knowledge in radio astronomical observations? Then you can apply to the graduate school in Radio and space science after your master's degree.
