The research in the area of Vehicle/Infrastructure Interaction explores the relationship between road infrastructure and road users in order to understand how safety can be affected. The results from our research can be applied by road designers in the construction of new roads or to identify road sections with a high risk of accidents.
Our research explores the relationship between road infrastructure and the driving tasks to understand how safety can be affected. The geometric and operational conditions (like speed limits) for roads influence how a driver navigates through different road elements (curves, intersections, work zones). Our research uses road infrastructure information from different map and road user databases together with naturalistic driving data. We use vehicle dynamics and data analysis techniques like machine learning to identify the variables that describe driver behaviour.
Results from our research can be applied by road designers when constructing new roads or addressing high risk road elements. The results also provide insight on crucial parameters for active safety systems which can be used by vehicle designers.
