Why crashes happen and how they can be prevented
The mission of the research unit on crash analysis and prevention is to understand why crashes happen and how they can be prevented. This includes understanding crash causation mechanisms related to the behaviour of vehicle occupants and vulnerable road users, as well as vehicle and environment factors. Strategies of risk exposure reduction in normal driving and threat avoidance in conflicts are used to prevent crashes. We leverage on a deep understanding of these strategies to support policy makers and build effective active safety and vehicle automation. We evaluate these strategies using conceptual and mathematical models developed with naturalistic and experimental data that we integrate in counterfactual simulations.
