Within the Safety and Reliability research area, risk and consequence analysis methods are developed to limit the consequences of an accident at sea.
Reliable design and minimized risks
All design work needs to consider uncertainty, perhaps in particular in marine engineering where the environment is harsh and unpredictable. We work with methods to assess and mitigate risks to ensure a design is as reliable as possible and minimize the consequences in case of an accident. For example, we study reliability based optimization of designs to ensure that safety margins are set as good as possible, ship routing to avoid matieral failure, and we look at how to increase the survivability of a vessel in case of a collision.
