We are pleased to welcome you to the 12th Scandinavian Conference on Industrial Engineering and Management (IEM), hosted by the Department of Technology Management and Economics at Chalmers University of Technology. 
This year's conference theme, Engineering the Future, highlights the importance of innovation and leadership in times of rapid change. The conference will explore the dynamic interplay of emerging technologies and effective management, emphasizing how both are needed to shape our future. Engineering is the cornerstone of progress, constantly expanding the realm of possibility. As we navigate the complexities of the new century, productively integrating innovative engineering and robust management practices will be essential. 
There will be keynotes, PhD paper presentations, roundtable discussions, debates, workshops and a visit to the World of Volvo. Please see our call for sessions, call for papers (for PhD students) and program for more information.

<li>13.00-17.30 – PhD Student Workshop&nbsp; During the workshop, PhD candidates will have the opportunity to present their research proposals, papers, and plans, receiving valuable feedback from both senior and junior opponents. The workshop is structured to ensure each candidate has ample time to thoroughly discuss their work in depth. Upon completion, all PhD students will be awarded a diploma certifying that the workshop is equivalent to 3 ECTS credits. <li>13.00-17.00 – Head of Departments Summit (by invitation only)&nbsp; At the Summit, the heads of IEM Departments from Nordic countries exchange ideas and experiences to better prepare for future challenges. Participation is limited to department heads, their equivalents, or designated representatives. <li>14.00-17.00 – IEM Program Directors Council&nbsp; The council shares insights and addresses issues related to IEM educational programs in the Nordic region. This year, we will specifically focus on three areas: 1) program architecture and design (focus and scope of master’s programs; flexibility and sub-specializations within programs; technology specialization tracks; integration of mathematics and programming in other courses etc.), 2) how AI tools force us to rethink teaching and assessment, and 3) productive involvement of alumni in education and beyond.&nbsp; Host: Henrik Berglund, Chalmers University of Technology Venue: Room Linnéplatsen – Vera Sandbergs Allé 8 </li>
<li>14.00-17.00 – Head of Doctoral Education Council&nbsp; The purpose of this meeting is to gather inspiration that will help us further enhance the quality of Doctoral education in IEM at our respective universities. During the council, we will explore the differences and similarities between our programs and discuss challenges, as well as opportunities for future collaboration. Dennis will discuss Syre’s mission to transition polyester waste into new, circular, polyester, repeatedly transforming textile waste into valuable resources. The conference theme – Engineering the Future – addresses the very nature of our field at the interface between technology and management.&nbsp;This conference aims to address the importance of innovation and leadership in times of rapid change. Engineering is the cornerstone of progress, constantly expanding the realm of possibility. As we navigate the complexities of the new century, productively integrating innovative engineering and robust management practices will be essential.
The call for sessions is now open. We invite everybody to submit ideas for sessions to the conference revolving around IEM-research, IEM-education, or hot topics of significance for young scholars of the IEM-field. A session could be of any of the following formats: presentations, panel discussions, workshops, debates, and round table seminars. Please submit your session proposals to:&nbsp;<a href="mailto:scaiem2024@chalmers.se">scaiem2024@chalmers.se</a>&nbsp;before October 15, 2024 (new date).Include the following information: title, intended track (research, education, post-graduate education), type of session (roundtable, panel, presentations, workshop or debates), and a short description. The conference sessions are designed to stimulate active participation among the attendees.

All presentations are linked to one and the same overall topic and each presentation is accompanied by the opportunity for the audience to ask questions about or contribute with a new perspective on the presentation. &nbsp;</li>
<li class="MsoNormal" style="color: #212121; mso-list: l1 level1 lfo1; tab-stops: list 36.0pt;">Panel Discussion Session A panel discussion is a discussion before an audience, about a specific topic. The topic is discussed jointly by a number of panelists who contribute with different perspectives on the subject. A panel is led by a moderator and there should be room for the audience to ask questions to the panel participants and contribute more perspectives on the subject. &nbsp;</li>
<li class="MsoNormal" style="color: #212121; mso-list: l1 level1 lfo1; tab-stops: list 36.0pt;">Debate Session A debate is like a panel discussion, but between two contradition positions. Thus, there is a stronger emphasis on the differences between opinions, perspectives, standpoints, and arguments. The panel is led by a moderator/referee and there should be possibilities for the audience to ask questions to the debaters. </li>
<li class="MsoNormal" style="color: #212121; mso-list: l1 level1 lfo1; tab-stops: list 36.0pt;">Workshop Session In a workshop, the focus is on participant activity. A workshop begins with a presentation of a specific topic that is made by the workshop leaders. Then follow practical exercises involving all participants. &nbsp;</li>
<li class="MsoNormal" style="color: #212121; mso-list: l0 level1 lfo2; tab-stops: list 36.0pt;">Round Table Discussions Session A round table discussion is initiated by a shorter presentation of the session managers of a specific topic. Subsequently, discussions in smaller groups - one at each table - follow a number of different issues related to the subject. At each table there is a discussion manager who can, if necessary, stimulate the discussion on a specific issue. After a specified time, the participants change table / question. The topic and the questions are summarized at the end of the session in a dialogue between the discussion managers and the participants.</li>
</ul>

Financial support ScAIEM offers financial support for PhD students selected for the ScAIEM PhD program. The financial grant per PhD-student is maximum 600 euros. You can find more information about the financial grant here:
