Mathematical Sciences celebrates Pi Day, the International Day of Mathematics, with a presentation by Julie Rowlett, musical interludes by Da Möbius Band, and "fika".
The presentation is open for everyone who is interested, there will also be a live stream on YouTube, link above.
Abstract: You probably know about the geometric significance of the mathematical constant, π. It is the ratio of a circle's circumference to its diameter. Did you know that π is also one of the reasons musical instruments sound the way they do? We will explore the mathematics of vibrating strings and see how π is present in the sounds of stringed instruments, and we'll listen to DaMöbius band to experience the sound of π. It turns out that π is just one of many special numbers that create the sounds we hear. We'll explore these mathematical constants and learn a bit about the research field focused on their study, known as spectral theory, with suitable musical interludes throughout.
