Abstract: Consider a closed surface such as the shell of a moving cell that changes its shape over time. Describing and computing such behavior on the individual surface level by deterministic models such as partial differential equations is very complex and usually not efficient if large numbers of surfaces such as cells need to be simulated. One possibility to overcome these complex computations is to describe the family of surfaces by its statistical properties. This makes the surfaces random and asks for the simulation of stochastic models such as stochastic partial differential equations on manifolds. I will introduce this stochastic approach and give an introduction to the recently started ERC project "StochMan".
