 Nordic Architecture // Nordic Women

What is “the Nordic”?

Nordic Architecture (ARK079) gives a basis for reflection on Nordic architecture and its makers, by examining and interpreting essential qualities of buildings in their historic, spatial, and social contexts. Students work in teams to examine projects through research, model-building, and multiple modes of presentation.

In 2022 and 2023 we have worked with the theme Nordic Women, which broadens the architectural perspective by illuminating contributions from designers more likely to be hidden in the Nordic canon. The projects highlight a variety of building types and design approaches from across the Nordic countries, and the women represented are:

  • Karen Nissen Brodtkorb (Norway)
  • Siv Carlsson (Sweden)
  • Karen Clemmensen (Denmark)
  • Marianne Dahlbäck (Sweden)
  • Birgitta Ekvall (Sweden)
  • Elisabet Breen Fidjestøl (Norway)
  • Pia Ilonen (Finland)
  • Kristin Jarmund (Norway)
  • Hanne Kjaerholm (Denmark)
  • Wivi Lönn (Finland)
  • Anu Puustinen (Finland)
  • Wenche Selmer (Norway)
  • Siv Helene Stangeland (Norway)
  • Lene Tranberg (Denmark)
  • Ingrid Wallberg (Sweden)
