Chalmers has broad expertise and a good research infrastructure in sport and technology. Here, athletes, coaches, industry and sports organisations can meet researchers, engineers and students to initiate advanced sports-related research. Sports technology spans several scientific disciplines and aims to improve athletes' performance and safety.

The sports sector is an ideal arena for utilisation of academic research, combining challenging requirements and conditions with rapid implementation of knowledge and inventions. We collaborate with athletes, coaches, enterprise and governing bodies to improve performance and safety for athletes in a number of sports. Most of our projects involve both senior scientists and students.

We have built an active collaborative environment around four core technology platforms (areas of competence), where our expertice and state-of-the-art facilities can be applied to a variety of sports. Focus is in cycling, athletics, equestrian sports, swimming and skiing.

Presented here are some sports in which we are actively involved.

Areas of Competence

Different types of sports face many similar challenges related to technology. We have identified four areas of competence - or technology platforms - where the high competence and advanced equipment found at Chalmers and among our many collaboration partners in academia and industry can make a difference in meeting the demands of technological research in sports.

Sports technology in education and projects with students

Students play a major role in Chalmers' investment in sport and technology. Through bachelor theses, degree projects, and amanuensis positions, opportunities are offered to participate in sports-related research, under the supervision of senior researchers and in collaboration with representatives from the sports movement and/or industry.

We offer many opportunities for students to participate in research projects through bachelor or master theses. There are projects linked to a variety of sports and involving students from different programmes. International exchange students also come to Chalmers to do their degree projects in sports technology. Bachelor theses are advertised annually at the departments that host the respective projects.

Chalmers has been a National Sports University since 2015 in partnership with the Swedish Sports Confederation. As of 1 August 2022, Chalmers will be the first National Sports University in Sweden to become the centre of excellence for sports technology. For Chalmers, this means a closer sports technology partnership with the sports movement and the various specialised sports federations in the country.

Offer degree projects and jobs

In their final semester, all students do a degree project. The degree project is an important opportunity for students to apply their knowledge to a real problem and it serves as a springboard into working life

Thesis portal for students

Students can find available degree projects in the thesis portal.
